History

Originally used for functionality and décor, nutcrackers today are primarily associated with the Christmas season- specifically the famous Nutcracker play. The original utilitarian nutcrackers were produced during the early 15th century in the rural forests of Germany and most often carved out of wood in the shape of soldiers, kings, or knights. Then, in 1892 when Marius Petipa adapted the E.T.A Hoffman story, The Nutcracker and The Mouse King, and combined it with a score written by Tchaikovsky, the beginning of one of the most iconic ballet productions was born.

Decorative Tradition

The function of cracking nuts can be done just as easily with a simple metal tool, but the beauty of the wood-carved nutcrackers has become a traditional Christmas decoration in many households. The Nutcracker Ballet gets its name from this holiday decoration.
