Decreasing in Numbers
At one point in history, the wolf population was abundant in North America and throughout the world. However, the decreasing size of their habitat and widespread hunting have greatly affected their numbers.
Interesting Facts
Wolves live in packs with the leader normally being the strongest male (Alpha), and often mate for life. When pups are born, all the wolves in the pack assist in raising them. The packs hunt at night in search of deer, elk, caribou and other large hoofed animals. Their main weapon is their teeth. Wolves that reach adulthood in the wild generally live 6 to 8 years, whereas in captivity, they can live twice as long. Wolves communicate with each other with visual expressions, as well as by howling- which enables pack members to communicate over long distances or through thick forest areas.
