A Venue for a Variety of Sports
Philadelphia’s Wachovia Spectrum was completed in 1967 to serve as an indoor arena for basketball, hockey, football, soccer, and lacrosse. On June 19, 1974, the Flyers were lucky enough to win their first Stanley Cup in the arena after defeating the Boston Bruins. Some other games that the Spectrum has held include the NBA Finals, NHL and NBA All-Star Games, Big Five basketball games, Atlantic Ten Conference Tournaments, an occasional high-profile Villanova University basketball game and WWF professional wrestling exhibitions.
More Than Just Athletics
Other than the home to many sporting events, the Spectrum has featured The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, and The Who- amongst many others. The statue of Sylvester Stallone (in his role as boxer Rocky Balboa) stood in front of the Spectrum for many years and was the site in the movie of the first and second fights with Apollo Creed. Sadly, following the 2008-2009 soccer and hockey seasons, the Spectrum was demolished to make way for a new hotel as part of the Philly Live! complex.
