Originally named the USS Eisenhower, this nuclear-powered, second Nimitz-class aircraft carrier officially changed her name on May 25, 1970 to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, being the first ship to be named after the 34th President of the United States. Commissioned in 1977, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (“Ike”) was constructed in Virginia. The dimensions of her flight deck are 1,092 feet long, width of 252 feet, with an area of 4.5 acres. Having won many awards during her time in service, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has participated in many deployments since her commissioning including: Operation Eagle Claw during the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1980, the Gulf War in the 1990’s, and operations in Afghanistan and Iraq in more recent years.
