History

The Navesink Lightstation, known as the Twin Lights of Highlands”, is 200 feet above sea level on top of the Navesink Highlands- standing guard over the northern New Jersey coast since 1828. Today’s brownstone lighthouse was built in 1862 to replace the original structure. The two towers are not identical but are connected by storage rooms and keeper’s quarters. The Twin Lights were the most powerful coastal lights in America, seen 70 miles out to sea and was where the first Fresnel lens was located in 1841.

A Museum & Beautiful View

In 1898, it was one of the first lighthouses to be powered by electricity. The unique structure, designed by Joseph Lederle, had one flashing beacon and one fixed. After 121 years of service, the Twin Lights were decommissioned in 1949. Today, the Twin Lights operate as a museum and the North Tower offers a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Twin Lights is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
