The Roman Catholic Church now recognizes Peter as the first Pope. Simon started as a fisherman and was one of the Twelve Apostles, along with his brother Andrew, chosen by Jesus who changed Simon’s name to Peter at their first meeting. According to the Bible, after Peter identifies Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus realized that Peter only knew this because of divine revelation. From there, in Matthew 16:18-20, Jesus tells Peter, “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” It was Peter who denied Jesus three times before the cock crowed the night of Jesus’ crucifixion just as Jesus foretold at the Last Supper. Years later, Peter suffered his own crucifixion upside down at the hands of Nero around the year 64 A.D. since he did not consider himself worthy to die in the same way as his Savior.
