History

Named for the bountiful gold in its rivers, Puerto Rico, or “the rich port” has an interesting history that encompasses the influence of Africa, Spain, and the United States. Christopher Colombus’ arrival to Puerto Rico in 1493 led to its status as a Spanish colony. It soon became a hot spot for production of cattle, sugar cane, coffee and tobacco. The intense reliance on crop production resulted in the importation of slaves from Africa for labor. The indigenous tribes of Taino and Carib play a vital role in the cultural and ethnic background of many Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Rico’s status as a territory of the United States started in 1898 under the Treaty of Paris in which Spain ceded the aforementioned nation, Guam and the Philippines to the U.S. In 1917, Puerto Ricans officially gained US. citizenship and in 1952 the island officially became a Commonwealth of American.

Culture

Today, Puerto Rico is a burgeoning location for tourists and industry alike. In 2016, more than 3.7 million tourists came to enjoy the rich culture and beautiful beaches of this island nation.
