History & Design

Under the thirty year supervision of architect John McArthur Jr., this beautiful building was completed in 1901. Its style is indicative of the French Second Empire architecture and remains the tallest masonry building in the world without a steel frame. Some of the most notable features of the building include the exorbinant number of rooms (695), as well as the iconic clock with four faces that is fixed near the top of the tower. Today, City Hall is a National Historic Landmark and a true treasure in the city of Philadelphia.
