A Diverse History

Pittsburgh, named after William Pitt in 1758, and its surrounding rivers offered many opportunities to the early settlers. The first coal mining in Pennsylvania was done in what is now called Mount Washington. In recent history, we have seen the city change from “The World’s Steel Producer” to an area known more for its advanced medical complexes, educational opportunities and hi-tech companies that are second to none.

The Iconic Duquesne Incline & Little Red Car

One of the treasures of Pittsburgh is the Duquesne Incline. This “museum-in-motion” has been scaling the side of Mount Washington since 1877. In the early years, the incline cars transported people from their homes on Mount Washington to their jobs below. They now carry people 400 feet up the side of Mount Washington to the observation decks that provide a beautiful view of the Pittsburgh skyline — ranked as one of America’s most beautiful views.

Pittsburgh natives and tourists, alike, will love this colorful ornament showing Pittsburgh from the Duquesne Incline.
