Wine has played a huge role in culture throughout history. Beginning with Greeks in the early Neolithic period, these people began to learn the art of viticulture- producing a variety of basic wines- and shared their discoveries with neighboring countries. Overtime, not only did wine become a trade commodity and source of medicinal success, but a large part of their religious decorum. Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, was worshipped during “The Feast of Wine”, as his cult would host wine drinking competitions amongst other festivities. His power over fertility, theatre, and religious ecstasy made him the perfect leader of the cult. Today, thanks to the discovery of wine by these early Neolithic communities, people across the world can enjoy the literal fruits of their labor. With more than 700 million gallons of wine consumed annually in the US alone, this drink remains a huge part of modern culture.
