History & Culture

Although quite young, Norway has an extensive history and unique culture. From their union with Denmark and Sweden, to their occupation by Germany during World War II, Norway has come a long way to become an independent state. Originally inhabited around 10,000 years ago, these first people survived by hunting and gathering– and in time began to farm. Today’s culture is still highly influenced by their humble beginnings as the popular cuisine includes salmon, herring, as well as a variety of cheese/diary products– all of which were eaten in the early days of inhabitance. Other than food, Norwegian art is vital to their culture, as they were highly influenced by Germany and Holland (who they were politically affiliated with). Most notably, Norway was home to famed artist Edvard Munch, who is credited with the creation of the iconic Scream painting.

Symbols

The Norwegian flag– a red background with a blue and white Scandinavian Cross in the foreground– is representative of the country’s history and values. The colors (inspired by the French flag) represent liberty and independence. The inclusion of the Scandinavian Cross gives homage to the ties Norway once held with other Scandinavian nations.
