A Colorful History

“The Homeland is first.” Mexico’s national motto rings true as this North American country fosters an extensive history and unique culture stemming from the original inhabitants. Thought to be home to American Indians in the early days, nomadic people from the Tehuacán Valley are largely responsible for the advancements in architecture and culture. With influences from the Olmec and Mayan cultures, the Mexico of today is still highly reminiscent to of its past, with monumental stone sculptures (depicting animal-human hybrids) and massive town centers dotting the country. Additionally, their agricultural skills produced the corn, beans, and chili peppers that we consider staples of Mexican cuisine.

Religious Influence

Early in the sixteenth century, military conquests in Mexico by the Spanish Empire resulted in the major effort to evangelize the nomadic people. Then, in the nineteenth century, Mexico continued to make the Christian Church a vital part of society, as Catholicism became the only religion. Today, Catholicism remains the leading religion, with 91% of the population following the Catholic Church.
