Unique History

Located along the coast of the Baltic Sea, Lithuania has a deep and rich history that spans across centuries. Lithuania was originally inhabited by various Baltic tribes throughout the 13th century, until the Kingdom of Lithuania was started in 1253. Then, in the 14th century the Grand Duchy of Lithuania became the largest nation in all of Europe. Over the following years land was transferred between Lithuania and the neighboring countries of Poland and Russia. In 1795, Russian annexed most of Lithuania’s territory.

Lithuania finally gained independence on February 16th 1918, just as the first World War was nearing its end– only to be occupied by the Soviet Union in World War II. It was not until 1990 that Lithuania formerly became independent and known as the “State of Lithuania.”
