Black felt box included
Lions have remained a symbol of courage, power and nobility for years. They make their homes in the savannas, grasslands, dense bush and woodlands of the sub-Saharan region of Africa and Asia. However, these creatures are facing endangerment as there are critically small populations of lions in Northwest India and North Africa where they were once very numerous. Due to their endangered status, they have been included in the Special Survival Plan- a program sponsored by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Luckily, National Parks and game reserves have been established to give the lions a protected place to live.
Male lions reach up to 500 lbs. and females 330 lbs. Males have a thick mane of brown or black hair circling their head and neck. Equipped with powerful legs, long canine teeth, and a strong jaw- a lion is capable of bringing down large prey. Lions live in a pride with about 15 other lions. The average life span is 10-14 years in the wild, over 20 years in captivity.
