History

The Victorian-style Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, located in North Wildwood, New Jersey, was built in 1874. The lighthouse still shines its beacon today reaching 14 nautical miles out to sea from its 49-1/2 foot tall tower. The lighthouse withstood the punishment of the Atlantic Ocean until 1913 when its foundation was damaged in a rough storm and was moved 150 feet to the west in 1914. With its very comfortable and picturesque structure, this lighthouse remained a nice home for the keeper and his family.

Modern-Day Beacon

An automated beacon was added in 1964 alongside a new iron light tower. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, the original lighthouse came back to life in April 1986 after a project was completed that improved the lighthouse grounds.
