The Big Barber Pole

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the nation’s tallest and remains a famous symbol of North Carolina-with its distinctive black and white spiral candycane striping-earning it the nickname The Big Barber Pole”. Due to its iconic status and age, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The current conical structure was built in 1870, is located 200 feet from the shore, and soars 208 feet high.

A Modern-Day Beacon

The present-day light is a rotating beacon which can be seen 20 miles out to sea. From a distance, the light appears as a short flash at intervals of 7.5 seconds warning modern-day sailors of the shallow sandbars below the water’s surface, commonly know as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”.
