A Turning Point in the Civil War

In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania the Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st to July 3rd, 1863. This battle was the turning point of the Civil War between the Union and Confederate soldiers, and resulted in the largest number of causalities during the war (between 46,000 to 51,000). With the North’s long and hard-fought victory, the battle ended Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the North and resulted in a victory for Major General George G. Meade’s troops. After the battle Lee quickly led his army in retreat back to Virginia.

The Gettysburg Address

Promptly after, on November 19, 1863, President Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address” to honor the fallen soldiers at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. He stated that, “these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.” Today, the Gettysburg National Cemetery and the Gettysburg National Military Park are two of the most revered historical landmarks in the nation.
