Habitats and Nesting

Flamingos live in groups called colonies that can include up to tens of thousands of flamingos. They are native to a multitude of places, such as parts of Africa, Southern Europe, Southwest Asia, Northwest India, South America, as well as the Galapagos Islands. When flamingos breed with another from their colony, they build a nest in the shape of a volcano made of mud, stones and feathers and they typically lay one large, white egg.

Unique Color and Diet

Flamingos get their pink/reddish feather color from their diet which is high in alpha and beta-carotene. While living in lagoons, swamps or lakes where the bottom is muddy, flamingos use their long legs and slightly webbed feet to stamp on the muddy bottom to mix the water and food particles together. They use their beaks to filter the food particles (usually shrimp or blue-green algae) out from the water. The destruction or changing of their habitat remains their biggest threat.
