History

The Maltese Cross, a symbol of protection and honor, is the firemen’s badge. The story goes back hundreds of years to a courageous group of crusaders known as the Knights of St. John, who lived in the Mediterranean Sea on a little island named Malta. When fighting the Saracens for the Holy Land, they faced a new and deadly weapon. These enemies hurled glass bombs saturated with a highly flammable liquid at the crusaders which was then followed by flaming torches- resulting in the deaths of hundreds of knights. Courageously, other crusaders risked their lives to save their brothers from dying a painful and fiery death, and were awarded a badge of honor- similar to the one firemen wear today. The firefighter who wears this cross is willing to lay down his life for fellow citizens just as the crusaders did so many years ago. The Knights of St. John were the first of many valiant firefighters.
