The White House, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States starting with President John Adams in 1801. Several reconstructions of the White House were undertaken due to fires, building deterioration, and additions that were made to alleviate overcrowding. Today, the White House is a six-story, 132-room grand structure which houses the Executive Residence, the West Wing, the East Wing and the Old Executive Office Building. It is 168 feet long and 85 feet 6 inches wide without porticoes, and 152 feet wide with porticoes. The White House received accreditation as a museum in 1988. The property the White House is located on is owned by the National Park Service and is part of President’s Park.
